My name is Dean Steacy, below is my submission concerning the proposed Accessibility Act.

My personal journey

Before I make my submission, allow me to share with you and your colleagues my journey of living with disability.  This will explain my personal motivation to advocate for legislative and policy changes to help disabled persons.

OVERVIEW:

This submission focuses on the  regulation, enforcement,  complaint resolution, and adjudication options available for persons with disabilities offered  by the Federal Government, which we think should be reformed, as part of an Accessible Canada Act. These changes are critical for the full participation of persons with disabilities in Canada. The Federal Government must lead by example.

This is a submission from two voters who are blind. We have faced challenges and artificial barriers at polling stations in each Federal Election over the last 40 years, for no reason other than that we are blind. It is a given that voting for us has  been more painful and hurtful than a root canal.

Introduction:

These few comments are made by two senior citizens who are blind and travel with guide dogs.  They are based on our travel experiences over the years, but particularly during the past six years, following our retirement from work, and as our needs change with age and increased disabilities.  During that time, we have primarily traveled by air for medical, visits to friends, and vacation reasons.
